The project.

“Safe on the net and on social media” – that is the motto of YoungData, the German youth portal on data protection and freedom of information.

The platform was founded by the Datenschutzkonferenz (DSK), an association of all federal and state data protection authorities. Here, children and young people find engaging content and comprehensive information on data protection and freedom of information, particularly on the safe handling of their data on social media.

Design & UX

The design is tailored to the young target audience. Children and young people should be able to identify with both the visual language and the way the content addresses them. The design is young, fresh and modern, and highly user-friendly.

Glossary

A glossary function was integrated into the backend to provide definitions for terms that require explanation, accessible across all content via tooltips. In addition, a dedicated glossary page offers an overview of all defined terms.

Navigation concept

Many topics on the youth portal are content-related, meaning they overlap or build on one another. An article on image rights, for example, can be assigned to the topic “Instagram” as well as to “Image Rights” or “Social Media.” The challenge for the information architecture of the youth portal is therefore the multiple embedding of the same content on different topic pages. Our solution is a simple, scalable interaction concept based on assigning articles to one or more topics through the use of tags.

For this, a hierarchical model with three levels was developed:

1. Categories for a first overview2. Topic pages for more in-depth information3. Articles for detailed knowledge transfer

The same articles can be assigned to different topics and displayed on different pages. This ensures that editors can manage content easily. For users, no information is lost, and everything can be found very easily.
