The project.

The LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold is Germany's largest open-air museum, showcasing Westphalian everyday culture from the last 500 years across 90 hectares, with more than 120 historical buildings from various regions of Westphalia. Visitors can explore farmsteads, workshops, and gardens and experience traditional crafts and agricultural techniques.

To make the exhibition digitally accessible as well, eyeworkers developed an online collection in TYPO3. By integrating the external database solution Axiell, a dynamic online platform was created that is continuously updated and expanded. Axiell is a software solution for managing and structuring data that helps cultural institutions such as libraries, archives, museums, and educational institutions organize their collections, catalog objects, and manage the loan of media.

Digital discovery opportunities

The online collection lets visitors discover exhibits conveniently from home. Users can search for specific objects, browse thematic albums, or use keywords to track down exciting finds. Every detail page offers background information on the history of the objects. To present the exhibits as vividly as possible online too, for example, size comparisons with animals were integrated.

User-friendly navigation

The homepage offers various entry points: quick access options provide a compact overview of specific topics, while a search function makes it easy to look for particular content or keywords. Users can also filter exhibits by criteria such as time period, material, or origin. Cross-links to similar objects invite deeper exploration.

Gamification – a playful approach to the collection

To motivate users to interact with the online collection, a playful element was integrated. On the homepage, visitors can test their knowledge by placing exhibition objects in the correct time period. This interactive format makes engaging with the museum's content entertaining.

The digital collection extends the museum experience and makes the exhibits accessible to a broad audience. Thanks to well thought-out navigation, informative detail pages, and playful elements, the museum's cultural heritage comes to life.
