The project.

For the Ministry of Education of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, we were responsible for the complete UI/UX concept and design of the Bildungsmanagementsystem Sachsen-Anhalt (BMS-LSA) – a central, web-based administration solution for the state's schools.

Our task was to develop a coherent, scalable design concept for a complex specialist application, based on the technical setup and the functional requirements. The starting point was thorough user research: in conversations with school leaders, teaching staff, and administrative personnel, we gathered needs, workflows, and expectations, and derived personas as well as a clear information architecture from them.

From wireframes to tested click dummies

Central processes – from student administration through lesson planning to the creation of statistics – were first conceived as user flows and wireframes and then brought to life in interactive click dummies. We tested these with target users before technical implementation, evaluated the feedback systematically, and iteratively optimised the user guidance. This allowed misconceptions to be avoided early on and significantly increased acceptance of the later application.

Components of the solution include student administration, lesson and timetable planning, teacher administration, and a self-service area for registration by parents. To keep the interfaces consistent, low-barrier, and efficient to use across all modules, we built a scalable design system with reusable UI components – the design foundation of the application, implemented throughout in Sketch.
